The James Pennell Mansion is a mansion that stands in the Pennellville Historic District in Brunswick, Maine.
The building of the mansion was completed in 1838. The house was built by James Pennell, a member of the Pennell shipbuilding family, a very successful shipbuilding family, who had settled in the area in the 1700s. The mansion was built with the profits from the shipbuilding company, at which James was employed.
The mansion was built in the Greek Revival style of architecture, which was tremendously popular in the 19th century, and was considered to be a highly desirable form. For the house, James Pennell wanted to build something that was top of the line, and exuded wealth. In order to do this, he employed the workers from the Pennell Brothers shipyard, and began construction on it in 1837. The James Pennell Mansion is located at the former Pennellville shipyard.
One notable feature of the house is the widow's walk on the roof of the main house.
The main features of the house are a large main house, and an ell. The house underwent major restorations in 1988, as it had not been lived in year-round since the advent of central heating.
